Connectivity

REST RunnerEfficient access to on-premises business data from cloud applications.

Available / supported

REST Runner is an Azure-hosted integration and optimisation layer between remote applications and the REST services hosted on your own systems. It reduces duplicate calls to the source, prefetches and retains data, and splits slow or unreliable requests before combining them into simpler responses.

01 / The problem it solves

Cloud apps need your data. Your servers need a break.

Cloud and mobile applications often need data that stays on your own systems. Calling those REST services directly can mean repeated requests, heavy use of your bandwidth and poor responsiveness when the source service is slow or unreliable.

REST Runner sits in between. It originated as a way to overcome speed and failure problems with U2 RESTful Services, and now gives remote applications a faster, more controlled route to your data.

02 / Capabilities

What REST Runner does.

Key capabilities

  • Hosting on Azure Web Apps and Azure SQL
  • OAuth2 authentication for applications calling REST Runner
  • Controlled HTTPS connectivity to your backend services
  • Prefetching and reusable datasets
  • Request splitting and recombination into one “virtual method”
  • Compression, optional encryption and retry

Common uses

  • Field sales OneApps
  • Mobile stock and price checks
  • Customer and supplier portals
  • Cloud applications needing ERP data
  • Large datasets from U2 RESTful Services
  • Store-and-forward outbound updates

Can be adapted: REST Runner was built for U2 RESTful Services but can be applied to other customer-hosted REST APIs. Retry and retention behaviour is defined for each project.

03 / How it works

A controlled cloud layer in front of your REST services.

01

Authenticate

Applications sign in to REST Runner using OAuth2; separate backend systems can use separate, scoped credentials.

02

Call

REST Runner calls your REST APIs over HTTPS from controlled Azure endpoints, so your endpoints can restrict which IP addresses are allowed.

03

Optimise

Large requests can be split into smaller calls and recombined; returned datasets can be retained, combined, compressed and optionally encrypted.

04

Update

Outbound updates post immediately, or are retained and retried until the target becomes available.

04 / Deployment & integration

Where it runs and what it connects to.

We install, configure and support REST Runner as part of your wider system landscape, and shape each deployment around the systems you already use.

05 / How it fits

Not just a cache or proxy.

REST Runner provides virtual methods, store-and-forward updates and security, and lets several cloud applications share one prefetched dataset instead of each calling your ERP.

A typical story: a remote OneApp calls REST Runner, which calls U2 RESTful Services in front of Avante or InfoFlo. For internal applications on your own network, OneGateway is usually the better fit.
